Beautiful but deadly...
Black bryony is a climbing hedgerow and woodland edge plant that flowers between May and August. Later on, it produces red, shiny berries that can be seen in autumn and even early winter. Our only native member of the yam family, Black Bryony is actually highly poisonous. Despite its name and superficial resemblance, it is not a relative of White Bryony. The berries here are turning colour by degrees which is the norm.
I was trawling my archives ( as usual recently ) and came across this. I know exactly where it grows in several places and should get out and take a new shot - or have taken one as the case may be. This was taken using my first dslr the Nikon d70s with the older version of the 105 macro lens so the exif here shows the length as 135mm as expected. Now on my PC it was a couple of MB and so I have have used an up-sizer but I’m looking at it and there is no difference in appearance whatsoever, except I can zoom in way way further. I got that diffuse background and the berries with great difficulty actually…now this is the thing about photos. The memory is clear as day of my late husband and I coming across these but they were the other side of quite a deep ditch at the side of a bridle way and looked out over open countryside enabling that backdrop being thrown right out of focus. My late husband hung on to me as I straddled the ditch and pulled me hard back as soon as I had hit the shutter button. I didn’t land in the ditch which had water in it but it was a very close thing :)
I have to clarify something here as I received a message of condolence.
The ‘late’ husband referred to here is Brendan. My beloved husband who sadly lost his fight for life in 2012 My present husband is Jonathan who I met in 2015 and married in 2018
We had both had long happy marriages and were amazed that we fell in love and married. Strangely enough Jonathan and Brendan were born in the same year 1946…Brendan was Irish and Jonathan is Scottish and my first husband who I divorced was English….
There must be a joke in there somewhere I reckon 🤔
