Solar Eclipse, April 8th, 2024

by sebulia

Since California was nowhere near the path of totality for today’s historic solar eclipse, I sort of cheated and used my home office, my iPhone and Epson digital projector (streaming the live NASA feed) to create a makeshift indoor solar observatory.

Got some dramatic views from Mexico, Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere, courtesy of NASA. All without glasses, or potential risk to what's left of my increasingly crummy eyesight (haha).

I did poke my head outside a few times during peak occultation here, but since that peak was only 57%, the drop in light levels was little more than a passing wispy cloud at best. My sister in the Midwest experienced a more severe drop in light levels. At any rate, it was pretty cool seeing the eclipse on a 7 ft. screen indoors, making out solar prominences and even the enormous 'granules' of the sun's surface. A much better view than I would've had with glasses.
