This Barlow-Wadley XCR-30 Mark 2 medium and shortwave receiver was built from 1973 by the Barlows Television Company in New Germany (Natal, South Africa). Made entirely of metal, it weighs more than 4 kg! It quickly gained an almost legendary reputation among shortwave listeners all over the world because it had a revolutionary reception principle developed by the scientist Trevor Wadley. Because of its relatively inconspicuous appearance, it is said to have been used by agents during the Cold War, for whom its high price was certainly not a problem... It's a lot of fun to use, I used to listen to Vividh Bharati from India with the typical film music in good quality on my terrace, for example, and also Radiophonikos Stathmos Makedonias in Thessaloniki, all on shortwave of course! Even today, my XCR-30 still works excellently: and although around 20000 of them were built, there are not many left, not least because the 6 D batteries have often run out, which fortunately was never the case with mine!
