822 storms up the 0.6% Merrimac Grade at the Westernmost Tunnel on the Whitethorne District, New River Tunnel. Prior to the N&W-VGN Merger of 1959, this tunnel was referred to by the VGN as Pepper Tunnel. The N&W renamed it to avoid confusion with their Pepper Tunnel located a few miles West of the Virginian's across the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
