Der Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery wurde von der Commonwealth War Graves Commission eingerichtet und wird von ihr gepflegt.
Etwa 80 Prozent der hier beerdigten Soldaten waren Flieger im Bomber Command der britischen Royal Air Force, die bei Angriffen auf Berlin und andere Orte im Osten Deutschlands im Rahmen der strategischen Bombenangriffe der Alliierten ums Leben kamen.
Der Umfang der Operationen und die Kosten für Bomber Command waren enorm. Im Laufe des Krieges flog Bomber Command über 387.000 Einsätze und verlor über 55.500 Mann, was einer Sterblichkeitsrate von über 44 Prozent entspricht. Das Durchschnittsalter der Crews betrug nur zweiundzwanzig Jahre.
Der Friedhof enthält fast 3.600 Commonwealth Gräber aus dem 2. Weltkrieg, etwa 400 davon sind nicht identifiziert.
Nach dem Krieg kamen noch etwa 270 Gräber zur Beerdigung von Mitgliedern der British Occupation Forces (britischen Besatzungskräfte) und deren Angehörigen bzw. von Mitgliedern der Allied Control Commission (alliierten Kontrollkommission) hinzu, die während ihrer Stationierung in Berlin verstorben sind.

The scale of operations and the cost to Bomber Command were enormous. During the course of the war Bomber Command flew over 387,000 sorties and lost over 55,500 men, representing a death rate of over 44 percent. The average age of these crews was just twenty-two.
The cemetery contains nearly 3,600 WWII Commonwealth graves, around 400 of which are unidentified.
After the war, around 270 more graves were added to bury members of the British Occupation Forces and their families or members of the Allied Control Commission who died while stationed in Berlin.
