Snæfellsjökull (Icelandic for "snow mountain glacier") is a 1446 metre high stratovolcano at the western end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland.

Visible from afar, Snæfellsjökull towers majestically in the centre of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. In Jules Verne's novel, this was the entrance to the centre of the earth.

I was up there in 1993, before Snæfellsjökull National Park was established in 2001.

We pitched our tent in the snow 20 metres below the top and spent the night there.

Snæfellsjökull (isländisch für „Schneeberggletscher“) ist ein 1446 m hoher Stratovulkan am westlichen Ende der Halbinsel Snæfellsnes auf Island.

Weithin sichtbar ragt der Snæfellsjökull majestätisch in der Mitte der Snaefellsnes Halbinsel empor. In Jules Vernes Roman war hier der Zugang zum Mittelpunkt der Erde.

Ich war 1993 oben, bevor 2001 der Snæfellsjökull Nationalpark gegründet wurde.

20 Meter unter der Spitze, haben wir unser Zelt im Schnee aufgeschlagen und dort übernachtet.
