Paris (France), Gare du Nord, 18 Feb 1988

Sleeping car on the "Flandres-Riviera". The "Flandres-Riviera" was an overnight service linking several points in northern France and the Low Countries with the south of France. The train included sleeping cars from Calais (connections by rail and ship from London) to Nice; Brussels to Ventimiglia and Tourcoing to Ventimiglia. In addition there were couchettes from Calais to Nice; Amsterdam to Ventimiglia; Brussels to Ventimiglia and Tourcoing to Ventimiglia. All these portions were joined together at Paris Nord to form a single train to the south. Seating coaches from Calais and Amsterdam and restaurant cars from Calais and Brussels were detached at Paris, so the whole operation was complex. The Amsterdam/Brussels cars arrived at the Gare du Nord at 22.06; the Tourcoing cars at 22.14; and the Calais cars at 22.28. Once shunting operations were complete, the combined train left for the Riviera at 23.12, more than an hour after the Amsterdam/Brussels cars had arrived. This photo shows the Tourcoing-Ventimiglia sleeping car.
