Oneonta Gorge

Oneonta Gorge facing the log jam at the mouth of the slot canyon. When this picture was taken the shallow water was ankle deep. The calm water, about half way to the log jam, was waist deep. During the wet season water flows deep and fast, often carrying large fallen trees. On this day, I was with my wife, another couple and their Golden Retriever. The dog was unable to traverse the log jam, which ran from one steep wall to the other. It is a beautiful hike but crossing the log jam is dangerous. Not long after I was there, a man slipped and fell between the logs hitting his head. He did not survive.

When this canyon was originally formed, the floor was not flat. It was deeper and much more rugged. Over thousands of years it was filled to today's flat bottom with rocks that sloughed off of the canyon walls or that washed in with rapid water flow. Rocks continue to occasionally fall -- some big, some small. I think a hard hat would be smart for hikers.
