Wikipedia: This Inn was built as a cottage in c1817 by a Mr W Colenutt who opened a path through Shanklin Chine and started to charge visitors a fee. (a chine is a steep-sided coastal gorge where a river flows to the sea through, typically, soft eroding cliffs) The building was much altered and extended in C20.
