The name is derived from the Kandelaar neighbourhood located west of the Delftse Schie on the border of the Noord-Kethelpolder and the Oost-Abtspolder and the name of the inn "De Candelaar", which was located on the Schie at the beginning of the 17th century.[ They refer to the candlestick that used to be here to light the ships that moored in the dark.
