Groote Kerk Maassluis

On March 18, 1943, a squadron of twelve Lockheed Venturas of the Royal Australian Air Force bombed Kerkeiland around half past three in the afternoon, severely damaging a number of houses in addition to the Groote Kerk. In addition, eighteen civilians were killed. The actual target was the Witol oil refinery, but due to the high altitude at which it was flown, the bombs landed wrong.

The organ survived the bombing and repair of the damage to the church was already started during the Second World War. Today there are memorial stones in the pavement to commemorate this bombardment.
