On the mountain of Pamukkale
Hierapolis (ancient Greek Ἱεράπολις 'Holy City', occasionally also Hieropolis) was an ancient Greek city in the region of Phrygia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey, on the mountain above Pamukkale), located at the edge of the Lycus Valley on the road in the Hermos Valley from Sardis to Apamea in Phrygia. The site was already famous in antiquity for its hot springs, the waters of which created the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale below the city. The water was used to dye wool: weaving and textile trade formed the foundations of the city's wealth. (WIKI)
