Great Blue Heron - Lunchtime

I was watching this heron as he waded in the shallows of Esquimalt Lagoon. He suddenly poked his head underwater and came up with this colourful fish skewered on his beak. The fish is a Shiner surfperch (Cymatogaster Aggregata). They're ubiquitous along the BC coast inhabiting the shallow waters around piers, kelp beds and eel grass beds. They form schools during the daytime and Herons will sometimes 'spearfish' into a shoal.
