Welcome to the seabed........

In the hinterland of Blokzijl in the Dutch province of Overijssel, large quantities of peat were extracted, wich were shipped to the port of Blokzijl by flat barges through the "Noorderdiep", a dug canal which you see in the foreground.

The surrounding peatland continued to sink, becoming lower than the level of the former "Zuiderzee".

When large parts of this former sea were drained, new land thus emerged and new fertile farmland was created on the drained parts of the former sea.

You can clearly see that the canal is lower than the new dilke and the reclaimed land in the background.

This is the result of the settling of the peat soil.

This area was also rich in reed and it was harvested to make roof material, among other things..
