SMK: "In Constantinople Lorck was given lodgings in the German House (Elci Hani in Turkish) with the other envoys. Lorck drew this view of the city's rooftops from here. In the background is the Sea of Marmara, in the centre the top of the Column of Arcadios and to the left of this is the Atik Ali Pasha Mosque. In the foreground we see the adjacent buildings with, among other things, a pair of lovers on a covered terrace on the left.
The question of what Lorck actually brought home with him from his trip in terms of sketches and works has been greatly debated. This is one of the few cases where scholars generally agree that Lorck did the drawing in Constantinople and brought it home with him."
