Northern Flicker ( Yellow Shafted - m )

The pair of Flickers zoomed past me and dodged into an open area. I approached and found the pair in an open campsite with the female in the trees and the male feeding on the ground. It is very common for this woodpecker to be found groundfeeding for worms and bugs rather than in trees. The male has the moustachial stripe and more prominent red crest on the head, but both sexes feature the Yellow shafted feathers that give this eastern variety it's name.

This male was so unconcerned by me he approached to about 4 inches from my feet, looking up at me as I stood with my camera .... the female was more shy and stayed in the trees the whole time.
