First generation of Mallet type in Indonesia

At year 1899-1908, The SS were bought 16 locomotive from 2 different factory, 12 units of BB10 were from Hartmann factory (Germany) and 4 units of BB10 were bought from Schwartzkopff (Germany). This locomotive get number code "SS500"

 

The Staatsspoorwegen company (Netherland) were bought this Mallet locomotive to Indonesia to service the Mountain railway in The West Java Province. This Mallet need residue as steam fuel to explore the Bandung - Bogor route (opened at year 1884), Rangkasbitung, and Banjar.

 

When Japan come to colonize, this locomotive was operated from Saketi to Bayah (80 km, built at 1942-1945) to pull the Coal transportation from Cikotok (Banten) area.

 

The high pressure were flowed to the rear piston, and the low pressure to the front piston which capable to explore the Mountain railway. It has 0-4-4-2T as wheel configuration. The front wheel were moved adjusted to the railway, but the second wheel fix to the frame. Meanwhile, the rear wheel are flexible/moved adjusted to the railway.

 

The lenght of this Mallet was 10560 mm, with maximum speed can reach were 50 km/h.BB 1012 was started operation at year 1907.Now, Only 1 unit of Mallet (BB1012) locomotive that still persist until now in Ambarawa railway Museum.
