Huckleberry blanket

While crawling under some bracken plants, as one does, I glanced skywards and marvelled at the beauty of the fronds against the clouds. Bracken are one of the oldest ferns with fossil records over 55 million years having been found. By the by, bracken is called ‘huckleberries blanket’ by the Umatilla Indians of the Columbia River. The fronds were used to cover a basket full of huckleberries to keep them fresh. Not that fascinating I grant you, but at least it provided me with a title.
