St Bartholomew. *

The famous statue of St Bartholomew (Marco d'agnate, 1562) in the right wing of the Duomo Cathedral transept, Milan. One of the apostles, he was flayed alive and then beheaded. In this representation, his skin is draped over his shoulders and the head and beard hang behind his back. This horrendous punishment was because he converted the King of Armenia to Christianity. The Kings brother was far from impressed and ordered the horrible execution.
