Curled woolly caterpillar - Isabella tiger moth
Having nearly stepped on this fuzzy woolly brown caterpillar I moved if off the trail. It then curled itself in defense.
Pyrrharctia isabella, the Isabella tiger moth, whose larval form is called the banded woolly bear, woolly bear, or woolly worm, occurs in the United States and southern Canada. I found the spicule pattern intriguing. One can't see it well in the uncurled larva.
