Diversity is the most important aspect of Mother Nature's creation and I love to find it in the garden. I rejoice in discovering new species and yesterday, whilst almost in despair at the lack of insect life, I came across what I thought was an unusual hoverfly. My hoverfly Google search didn't present a result and it was quite by chance that I stumbled upon the true identity of this wonderful stripy insect with the pointy abdomen. It's a figwort sawfly, tenthredo scrophulariae, and low and behold, we have a figwort plant growing close by. Figwort flowers are beloved of wasps but I'm very happy to know that the plant also supports another species which is a real pleasure to see in the garden. Here is yesterday's specimen on a close-by oregano flower. It's not the best lighting but at least I got a usable shot as it was a very flighty insect that didn't settle for any length of time.
