The Resting American Black Ducks EcologyF19

I found these American Black ducks (Anas rubripes) while hiking at Eldridge Park, IL. They are closely related to Mallards. I couldn't get too close to them because they began to approach me with angry eyes.

I saw them resting after having a delicious meal in water. These ducks usually eat plant matter. During breeding season, they do eat aquatic insects and fish. They live arounds lakes, ponds, brackish water, marshes, streams, etc. They do prefer living around shallow areas. In shallow water, they submerge their heads only into the water and feed on aquatic plants or animals. If the water is deep, they dive deeper than 12 feet underwater.

Their environment suggests they are heavily exposed to saline environment. Despite all this exposure, they are able to maintain osmoregulation (salt-water balance) quite well. This is because they are euryhaline organisms. They have salt glands that constantly work to excrete excess Sodium and maintain fluid homeostasis. Without this ability, salt accumulation may cause death or harm to the species.
