X-Mansion - 2 a.m.
It’s getting late, and Sean can’t sleep. He’s worried about the Purifiers, about his missing Brother, about Mutants in general. He’s restless. He thinks maybe he should’ve gone with the older kids; Kitty and Peter, and their friends, but he didn't feel quite up to it yet.
Earlier in the day, Kitty had introduced him to her friends, who were around their age, and a few years older than Sean. Their names are Benjamin Hamill, Sooraya Qadir and Angel Salvadore, also known as Match, Dust and Tempest. They all made up their 'code-names' years ago, hoping to use them when they one day join the X-Men. Peter's is 'Colossus', and Kitty's is 'Shadowcat'. He still doesn’t feel like he fits in here yet, even with his own code-name: Banshee.
Sean is alone in his room. His roommates were Colossus and Match, as well as a kid his own age called Beak. His real name was Barnell Bohusk, but he went by ‘Beak’. Going looking for him, Sean makes his way out of his room, and sneaks downstairs and into the Living Room. There he finds Peter’s younger sister, Illyana, and Beak, watching cartoons. It’s Phineas and Ferb, by the looks of it.
“Hey guys, can I join you? I can’t sleep...” Sean says, nervously.
They turn to him suddenly, as if he startled them.
“Oh dude! We thought you were Mr. Drake or Mr. Wagner! Of course you can, the first few nights are always rough,” Beak laughs. His voice is somewhat bizarre, coming from a literal beak, but it’s honestly one of the least weird things about this place, given there is a literal superhero team operating from the basement, who are also their school teachers.
“So what are you guys doing up so late?” Sean asks, getting comfy on the couch.
“I’m staying up for my brother. I guess I just worry he’ll get hurt out there… I wish he wouldn’t go...” Illyana replies.
“And I keep her company” Beak says, grinning overtly.
“Well there must be something around here to do that beats cartoons. Any suggestions?” Sean proposes.
“Well… There is this one place...” says Beak, cracking another smile.
The trio make their way cautiously across the corridor. Illyana says she has memorised a path across the floorboards that doesn’t make them creak, so Beak and Sean follow behind her. None of them want to wake up any of the Professors, although Mr. Summers, AKA Cyclops, and Ms. Munroe, AKA Storm, aren’t here tonight. They’ve gone into the city for some kind of TV appearance on ‘The Stryker Show’. Sean hated that show…
They travel across the main hall, then into the corridor with all of the staff offices in. At the end of this corridor is a short flight of stairs, heading downwards. At the base of the stairs, is an irregular round metal door, almost bunker like, with a large X symbol across it. Beside it, a number pad, which Illyana quickly puts a 6 number code into, something else she must’ve memorised.
“Quickly! Before Kurt or Bobby hear us!” she says urgently, in a hushed voice, as the door unlocks quickly.
After they’ve stepped inside, the door automatically re-locks with a loud KAKRANG!
“I’m guessing this place is what I think it is...” Sean says, in amazement.
“Yep. The X-Men headquarters.” Illyana announces.
A long, silvery corridor with rows of doors either side. It looks pristine, but also like it was designed about 20 years ago. The doors have several signs above them; The Danger Room, Observation Deck, The Lab, The Blackbird, The Armoury, and more. At the end of the corridor, as sign reads ‘Cerebro’, whatever that means.
“Come on, this way!” She adds, leading us into The Armoury.
The room is messy inside, with lots of boxes and equipment lying around. But most noticeably, on their own plinths, are The X-Men’s Uniforms.
“Woah!” Sean says, admiring the uniforms of the current X-Men; Storm, Iceman, Nightcrawler and Cyclops. In-between them, other uniforms. Sean recognises Phoenix’s and Professor X’s wheelchair, and also sees other names, like Angel and Beast. However, their costumes are missing.
“This one is my favourite…” Illyana says, holding up a red, black and yellow costume that looks brand-new. On the box, it reads: Colossus.
Suddenly, Beak starts to flap his arms about. They hear the loud KAKRANG! of the main door again.
“Someone’s coming!” he shrieks.
They panic! Beak, Sean and Illyana run and hide behind a stack of other costume boxes, hoping they don’t get caught as they can hear distant voices approaching.
“It can’t be true, Kurt! We have to check it out! I refuse to believe they’re dead until I see for myself!” Bobby Drake shouts to Kurt Wagner as the pair enter The Armoury in a hurry.
“Well ze police seemed to confirm it! If it’z true… If Scott and Ororo are really gone...” Kurt responds, getting into uniform.
“Well they aren’t! Not until I see! Now let’s get a move on!” Bobby snaps, pulling on his purple trench coat.
With a sudden BAMF! the pair then disappear. Illyana, Sean and Beak come out of hiding, unsure how to process the information they just absorbed.
“What… What do we do?” Sean asks, unsure what else to do.
“I… I dunno, man. Damn...” Beak says, completely shook.
“We hold the fort, that’s what.” Illyana interject.
“With Nightcrawler and Iceman gone, and my brother and Kitty away with their friends, there’s no one else here to hold down X-Mansion. We should do it, just in case something happens, right…?” she says.
With her leading them, the trio go back upstairs into the main hallway. They grab chairs and pull them into the main hall, and sit in a triangle, facing away from each other, not really sure what else to do. They’re there for at least an hour, and Sean falls asleep at some point. Suddenly, he is awoke.
“Sean, Illyana, I can hear something!” Beak whispers loudly, waking them up.
Then, all of a sudden, a large dart bursts through a window and lands right in Beak’s chest, and he collapses off his chair.
“Run, Sean!” Illyana shouts, before she too is tranquilised.
Sean, sure his fate is sealed, does the only thing he can do to warn the other mutants in the Mansion.
“EEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeEEE!” he sonic-screams, at the top of his lungs, until a few darts hit him directly in the chest.
The last thing he sees before passing out is Purifier soldiers descending from the ceiling windows above him, with their dart guns drawn, storming the Mansion.
