Laguna Cuicocha 3,400 m a caldera in which a crater lake has formed. Diameter 3 km. at the foot of Cotacachis 5,000m. The Cotacachis is dormant. It makes the soil of the Otavalo valley fertile.
The drainless crater lake within the caldera contains four lava domes of volcanite that form 2 steep, forested islands. An older lava dome forms part of the eastern rim. The lake, max. 200 m deep, is highly alkaline, with little life.
The caldera was formed by a massive steam eruption 3,100 years ago, which caused a pyroclastic flow of five cubic kilometers of material to cover the surrounding area with up to 20 cm of volcanic ash.

Der abflusslose Kratersee innerhalb der Caldera enthält vier Lavadome aus Vulkanit, die zwei steile, bewaldete Inseln bilden. Ein älterer Lavadom bildet einen Teil des östlichen Randes. Der See, maximal 200 m tief, ist stark alkalisch und weist wenig Leben auf.
Die Caldera entstand vor 3.100 Jahren durch eine massive Dampferuption, die einen pyroklastischen Strom von fünf Kubikkilometern Material verursachte, der die Umgebung mit bis zu 20 cm Vulkanasche bedeckte.
