1837, Seth Eastman, View of the North River from the North West Corner of Fort Clinton - West Point [watercolor] -- National Gallery of Art (Washington)
From the museum label: As a young cadet at the US Military Academy at West Point, Seth Eastman trained in drawing and topography. He later used these skills as an artist-soldier in the Western frontier, making maps and documenting military activity. Eastman drew these sketches of the Hudson River during the seven years he spent as an assistant teacher of drawing upon his return to West Point. The small binding holes along the left edge of each sheet indicate the pages were once part of a sketchbook Eastman carried for painting with watercolors outdoors.
