1893, Edvard Munch, The Scream (detail) -- National Museum (Oslo)

From the museum label: The Scream is innovative in both form and content. In its technique and abstraction, it seems quick and spontaneous. Yet the work has evolved over time. Munch exhibits it in Berlin the same year that he paints it, then with the title Despair. He later produces several other versions, both as paintings and prints.
