1901, Edvard Munch, Melancholy -- Munch Museum (Oslo)
From the museum label: Edvard Munch recalled painting this woman 'sitting by the flaming red table with the window behind her — It was a matter of depicting her large, looming and monumental, her dark mute unrelenting sorrow - That is how the melancholic woman I saw in a mental hospital was sitting - she did not recognise her sister, who spoke to her tenderly — she understood nothing — her big black eyes had no lustre — stared empty and motionless out into space.'
