From the museum label: Dahl gets to know the mountains deep in the Sognefjord during a summer trip. The following year he paints the scene covered in snow. The view shows Fireite, the site of a battle for the Norwegian crown in 1184. The menhir in the painting is one of several standing at Nornes by the Sognefjord when the artist visits the site in summer 1826.
