1911, Emil Nolde, At the Night Bar -- National Museum (Oslo)

From the museum label:

With his intense colours and coarse brushstrokes, Emil Nolde is a major figure in modern art in Germany around 1910. Landscapes, outdoor life, and biblical scenes are depicted in a style that is raw and ragged.

Many years later, in the 1930s, Nolde becomes a Nazi sympathiser. He continues to support the regime, even after they condemn his art as degenerate (entartete Kunst) and forbid him to paint. In the post-war period, it is the pioneering aspect of his work that receives attention in a Germany searching for new cultural role-models. Today, we know that his support for the Nazis was more profound than once assumed. How does this affect our view of his pictures? Can we distinguish between the art, the artist, and the person?
