1867, Édouard Manet, View of the 1867 Exposition Universelle -- National Museum (Oslo)

From the museum label:

Here we see life in the modern city, with its architecture, parks, and people on the move. But something isn't quite right. The River Seine is missing, buildings have vanished, or are too small or too big. And where is the main subject, the World Exposition?

The World Expositions present art, architecture, and products from around the globe. In 1867, Paris is the host city. Crowds come flocking in. Manet is not represented in the exhibition. He takes matters into his own hands, setting up a simple pavilion where he shows his paintings. It is located on the Trocadéro hill, from where he paints this picture.
