1787, Joshua Reynolds, Portrait of Maria Marow Gideon and her brother, William -- Courtauld Gallery (London) (special exhibition)
From the museum label:
Joshua Reynolds was the leading portraitist of his age. From 1768 until his death in 1792, he was President of the Royal Academy, which was located at Somerset House from 1780. He showed this portrait of siblings Maria and William Gideon at the Academy's annual exhibition in 1788, one of the last at which he would exhibit. It was commissioned at a cost of £300 by their father, the financier Sir Sampson Gideon. Maria appears to have sat for Reynolds six times, William three or four.
Grand and imposing, the portrait revels in the dashing fashions of the day, including Maria's black beaver hat topped with white ostrich feathers and the bright blue bolt of her silk sash.
