1809 (ca.), J.M.W. Turner, The Sun Setting Through Vapour -- Courtauld Gallery (London) (special exhibition)
From the exhibition label: In this serene seascape, J.M.W. Turner captures the sun's effects when seen through mist. The thick yellow vapour casts a golden light over the scene, which, combined with its calm waters and fishermen, suggests peace and prosperity. However, this is tempered by the presence of a battleship, recently identified as HMS Victory, about to undergo repairs after the Battle of Trafalgar. Behind it, a prison ship, or hulk, is visible. The painting is indebted to the Dutch 17th-century marine paintings that Turner so admired and wished to rival in his own age.
