1882, Claude Monet, The Church at Varengeville -- Courtauld Gallery (London) (special exhibition)

From the exhibition label: Having grown up in Normandy, Claude Monet often returned there to paint. In 1882, he stayed in the seaside town of Varengeville, depicting its coastline and the distinctive silhouette of its church on seven occasions. Half of these were taken from this dramatic viewpoint, with the building seen across a hidden gorge. Monet would work on multiple canvases at once, moving between them to capture the changing effects of light. Here, church and foliage are set ablaze in vigorous strokes of orange, yellow and pink. The pale horizon line of the sea balances out the frenzy of curve and colour.
