1916, Wassily Kandinsky, Untitled -- Courtauld Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Russian-German artist Wassily Kandinsky was known for his radical theoretical texts and artistic innovations, particularly his pursuit of abstraction as a way of evoking a spiritual response in a viewer. In 1916 he was in Russia, primarily producing works on paper like this one. Partly a product of straitened circumstances during wartime, they were also testament to his belief in the expressive potential of an ink drawing: the fine working in three separate applications of ink and his signature and date reveal its designation as a complete artwork.
