1954, Peter de Francia, The Execution of Beloyannis -- Tate Modern (London)
From the museum label: Following the Greek Civil War in 1946-9, the charismatic Greek Communist leader Nikos Beloyannis was unjustly charged with spying for the Soviet Union. Despite international protests, he and three other men were executed in March 1952. De Francia portrayed Beloyannis's death in what he called 'a large history painting... tackled in a very modern way'. The red carnation helps to identify Beloyannis, after a photograph of him holding the flower had been widely reproduced.
