1908, Natalia Goncharova, Gardening -- Tate Modern (London)

From the museum label: Goncharova found inspiration in rural life and the traditional elements of Russian folk arts, including popular prints, shop signboards and religious icons. In Gardening she uses bold colours, emphasises outlines and employs a flattened perspective. As the artist couldn't afford a professional studio, she painted in the living room of a flat she rented from her father in central Moscow. In 1913 Gardening was exhibited in Moscow as part of a vast exhibition of 800 works by Goncharova, the scale of which was unprecedented for a woman artist at the time.
