1511 (ca.), Raphael, Drapery study and three hands -- British Museum (London)
From the museum label: The main study is for the drapery for the figure (perhaps the Roman poet Horace) on the extreme right of Raphael's fresco of Parnassus in the Stanze della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace, Rome. The commission to decorate Pope Julius Il's library was Raphael's first papal commission and this supremely elegant drapery study, combined with three hands in the same fresco, demonstrates the artist's careful preparation of every detail of the painting. On the other side of the paper is a discarded idea for another figure in the same fresco.
