1534 (ca.), Michelangelo, The Holy Family with the Infant St John -- British Museum (London)

From the museum label: Payne Knight's 1824 bequest included the first Michelangelo drawing to enter the Museum's collection. This tender study of the Holy Family likely dates after the sculptor's definitive return to Rome in 1534 and shows his continued interest in the motif of the Christ Child twisting around to suckle from his mother. He had used this pose in his unfinished Virgin and Child sculpted for the Medici Chapel in the 1520s. The inclusion of a lightly sketched Infant Baptist and Joseph exclude it being a direct study for the marble sculpture.
