1913, Duncan Grant, Head of Eve -- Tate Britain (London)

From the museum label: The painting depicts the head and upper torso of the biblical figure Eve. Duncan Grant fuses several influences in Head of Eve including Byzantine and early Italian art as well as the painterly style of artists Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. The short, hatched strokes painted on Eve's neck, cheeks, nose and hair were also used by Picasso. They create a sense of depth against the intense ochre colour. It seems likely that this painting began as a study for a lost painting titled Adam and Eve.
