1852, Utagawa Hiroshige, Low Tide at Shinagawa -- British Museum (London)
From the museum label: Waterside activities were a popular subject for uchiwa fans. During the first three days of the 3rd month of every year, crowds would arrive at Shinagawa Bay to gather shellfish at low tide. Hiroshige based the scene on this triptych on his earlier fan print. He added more social groups and humorous touches like the man helping a friend who has slipped in the mud.
