1839 (ca.), Utagawa Hiroshige, Tokaido Autumn Moon: Kanagawa Heights, Musashi Province -- British Museum (London)

The Tokaido followed the Pacific coastline. The Kisokaido passed through the opposite side of the mountains now called the Japanese Alps. This geography inspired Hiroshige to design eight colourful Tokaid prints to decorate the front of uchiwa fans and eight simpler Kisokaidõ prints to cover the back. These two prints show the busy Tokaido post towns of Kanagawa and Miya.
