1877, Camille Pissarro, The Côte des Boeufs at L'Hermitage -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: Pissarro painted most of this ambitious landscape in his studio, basing it on a hillside near his home in Pontoise. Two small figures can be made out among the trees. The picture's distinct verticals and densely applied brushstrokes reveal Pissarro's systematic attention to form: in some parts, he used so much paint that he had to line the canvas to support its weight.
