1904 (ca.), Paul Cezanne, The Grounds of the Château Noir -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: In his later years, Cezanne rented a room in the Château Noir, a rambling house near Aix-en-Provence constructed to look like a ruin. This dramatic view of the ridge above the house shows a sombre entanglement of foliage, branches and rocks that almost obscures the sky. The dark colours and tight framing of the wild vegetation create an oppressive atmosphere.
