1879, Edgar Edgas, Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: The internationally celebrated bi-racial acrobat Anna Albertine Olga Brown (1858-1945), known by her stage name Miss La La, ascends to the circus ceiling during her famous 'Iron Jaw' performance. She was lifted by a rope attached to a leather mouthpiece clenched between her teeth. Degas sketched her many times between December 1878 and January 1879, when she was performing at the Cirque Fernando close to his Montmartre studio. The many preparatory sketches and studies for this painting demonstrate Degas's dedication to capturing her daring feat.
