1530 (ca.), Garofalo, Vision of Saint Augustine -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Legend has it that the early Christian bishop Saint Augustine (354-430) saw a child trying to empty the sea into a hole dug in the ground. When he pointed out that this was impossible, the child replied that it was equally impossible to explain how God exists in three persons (God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost). Garofalo, who worked in Ferrara, presents a vivid depiction of Augustine's vision.
