1530, Correggio, Christ Presented to the People (Ecce Homo) -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Bound and crowned with thorns, Christ looks to us for compassion as he is sentenced to be crucified. The turbaned figure behind him is Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who oversaw Christ's trial and presented him to the people with the words 'Ecce Homo' ('Behold the man'). Correggio places us in the position of the crowd who condemn Christ to die. His fluent blending of oil paint veils Christ's face in hazy shadows that intensify the sorrow of his expression. The Virgin Mary collapses into the arms of Saint John the Evangelist.
