1909, Henri Rousseau, Portrait of Joseph Brummer -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: A sculptor by training, Joseph Brummer (1883-1947) was a Hungarian-born art dealer, selling mainly Asian, African and South American works of art in Paris and New York. Brummer greatly admired Rousseau's primitive style and commissioned his portrait for 300 francs. Placing him in an imaginary landscape, Rousseau portrayed Brummer as something of an emperor, casually enthroned and smoking.
