1889, Vincent van Gogh, Landscape with Ploughman -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Van Gogh painted this view from the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy to which he admitted himself. The scene was based on direct observation but was laden with personal meaning. The hardworking ploughman becomes a symbol for the artist himself, who wrote to his mother: 'I am ploughing on my canvases as they do in their fields.'
