1881 (ca.), Paul Cezanne, Self-Portrait -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Cezanne paints himself at 40 years old, at a time when he was moving away from Impressionist circles in Paris. Using the same technique as in his landscapes, he paints the modulated tones of his face in short parallel brushstrokes. Their slanting angles echo the geometric lines of the wallpaper, unifying Cezanne with his surroundings.
