1899, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Interior -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Ida IIsted (1869-1949), Hammershoi's wife, stands with her back to us in their home in Copenhagen. The artist was known for his poetic interior scenes, often excluding objects and facial expressions that might suggest stories. The focus here is on the soft daylight entering from an unseen window, illuminating the polished tabletop, stove and architectural features of the modest room.
